7 Terrible Cover Redesigns

I know that people say you should never judge a book by its cover, but it does make a difference. Sometimes, publishers decide to redesign perfectly decent book covers, and it really bugs me. Granted, there are some books that need them, but seriously?? IF PEOPLE LIKE IT THEN YOU SHOULD JUST LEAVE IT AS IT IS. Ahem. Sorry.

7. Harry Potter

I don’t know if this is version two or three or four or whatever,  but I’ve never really liked it. I mean, they’re not bad, but I prefer the originals. (But some even-newer ones have just been revealed, and I don’t mind those. Oh, and all the new covers are on the left!)

6. The Hunger Games

I’m a sucker for the more minimal cover art for THG, although it actually isn’t the original design. But I don’t like the new neon ones – they just hurt my eyes every time I walk past them in the bookshop.

5. Eleanor and Park

When I requested a copy of this for my birthday (I read it on Kindle) I had to specify that I should be bought the US cover rather than the UK one. It’s SO MUCH PRETTIER, guys.

4. H.I.V.E

I don’t understand why they had to change these and make them glossy, of all things. I hate glossy covers.

3. Holes

Movie covers are never great, but this one hurt me particularly because the original cover art was so awesome. I bought the old edition from Oxfam the other day, and it was just so…satisfying. Everyone loves a bargain, right?

2. Artemis Fowl

My friend and I have a personal vendetta against this one; they gave Artemis a goatee in some of them. He looks like even more of an idiot than he is. Plus, he would hate the cheesy tag line.

1. Cat Royal

No! My eyes! Gloss! AND FACES! NOOOO! I hate it when they put photos of faces on books, and these ones make Cat look much less badass than she is. (By the way, apologies for the weird photo size. :-/ )

Agree with me? Do you have any complaints for cover redesigns?

  1. Some covers that bother me are the covers for Cathy Cassidy’s ‘Chocolate Box Girls’ series. There are versions with the girls’ faces on, and I think that it just takes the fun out of imagining the character. Luckily, I got the ones which are covered in chocolates; the only downside with this is I can’t eat it 😉

    1. 🙂 Om nom! I haven’t read The Chocolate Box Girls, but my friend has a few of the copies (I think) you’re talking about and I always thought they were pretty.

  2. I reallyy dislike some of the new cover redesigns for Tamora Pierce’s Alanna books (Song of the Lioness Quartet). The series is set in a medieval fantasy world, but the book covers make it look like it’s a sappy 21st century teenage romance. :/

    1. 😦 That DOES sound annoying. There was quite a big trend in this kind of thing after Twilight etc.

I haven’t actually read any of Tamora Pierce’s books, but I’ve seen them mentioned a lot. Would you recommend the Alanna books?

  3. Yes some of those covers are pretty bad but at the same time I find myself ordering the UK versions of books because I think they are beautiful. Example My True Love Gave to Me looks so much better in the UK version. As well as the Fangirl collectors edition. Just adore it. So I think it all depends on people preference. Great post 🙂

  4. Woah…that Hunger Games redesign looks, there’s no other word for it…terrible!

The original definitely looks better. Hehe, I own the newer covers of Artemis Fowl and Hive. Though personally I like the old AF covers better. He looks so much cooler and sinister in those XD

    1. Hehe, I have the new covers of HIVE too! And I think they changed the complete series design for AF for the publishing of the last book, so I have that in the new edition too. 🙂

    1. Oh, I didn’t know that! As far as I was aware original UK edition is different – it has silhouettes and blood splatters and stuff. (Yes, stuff, haha.)

🙂 And thank you for following mine! I had great fun reading through your posts this afternoon!

  5. 7. I actually like the new version of Harry Potter. It isn’t fabulous or anything, but it looks a lot cleaner and more elegant than the original.
    6. EW, just no! Those new colors are just so wrong.
    5. I like both covers for different reasons. The one on the left has much prettier colors, but the one on the right has a better design.
    2. The new Artemis Fowl cover is hideous and frankly, really creepy.

I have a huge distaste for cover redesigns, mostly if they’re done in the middle of a series! Like with Across the Universe by Beth Revis.

    1. Yes, I find that it’s especially annoying when they change it for the last book. Couldn’t they wait until the series had finished so that I could buy the box set? (But I guess it’s to get you to buy the new covers, even if they’re not nice.) I haven’t read Across the Universe, but I’ve seen people mention the bad cover redesign.

I don’t have a huge dislike for the new Harry Potter, but I personally prefer the originals. 🙂 It’s great to hear what you think!

    1. I know, it’s so hard to keep track of all of them! I’m personally loving the new HP covers that were released in the UK (I don’t know, it might be worldwide too). They’re a similar art style to the first UK editions, but with much more vibrant colours and better text layout. (Sadly, the box set is expensive, though.)
